Phonics & Early Reading
At Blennerhasset School, we follow Little Wandle Letters and Sounds for our phonic and early reading curriculum. We use the decodable texts at all levels and books are matched closely to individual children's skills and abilities.
From Y2 to Y6 we use Collins Big Cat texts for individual and group reading and again these texts are closely matched to children's reading skills and abilities.

Reading Comprehension:
We use Literacy Shed for reading comprehension questions across KS2. These questions relate to high quality texts and help to demonstrate a range of reading comprehension skills using VIPERS.
VIPERS is an acronym to aid the recall of the 6 reading domains as part of the UK’s reading curriculum. They are the key areas which we feel children need to know and understand in order to improve their comprehension of texts.
VIPERS stands for
Vocabulary
Inference
Prediction
Explanation
Retrieval
Sequence or Summarise
Spelling:
We follow the No Nonsense Spelling scheme for Years 1 to 6 along with learning the spellings from the statutory spelling lists in the National Curriculum for English.
Speaking, Listening and Oracy:
Teaching children to be confident, articulate and clear speakers is very important to us at Blennerhasset School. We plan in a variety of opportunities for children to develop and use their speaking, listening and oracy skills throughout the curriculum. Examples of this are shown through music and drama performances, Poetry by Heart and Enterprise projects to name just a few.
